CARS BURIED IN SNOW

On January 28 at 02:33 p.m. the Aragatsotn rescue service received information about several cars stuck in snow on the highway Geghadir-Norashen. As a result of the heavy snowfall the cars needed the help of the rescuers.

INTERNET PROVIDERS HAVE TURNED TO COURT

Early in the morning «ArmenTel» started to switch off the telephone numbers of several Internet Providers. On January 25 the January 8 decision of the Committee Regulating Public Relations took effect.

DOES THE PUBLIC TELEVISION VIOLATE THE LAW?

The RA Law on the Anthem came into force this year. According to the law, all the TV and Radio companies have to start and finish broadcasting programs with the RA National Anthem. If the TV Company broadcasts round the clock, the anthem must sound at midnight and at 06:00 a.m. The majority of the TV Companies carry out the demand of the law; the Public television does not.

SUICIDE AFTER ATTEMPT OF MURDER

On January 25 the Gyumri department of the police was informed that Paskevich Ghazaryan (b. 1931) committed suicide in his house in Gertsen street 3/12.

TAXIS WILL HAVE YELLOW NUMBERS

The taxi services are not going to make their service more expensive, although the Government decision on taxis will cost them dear. “Of course yellow numbers will reduce the quantity of the services, but they will not become more expensive. The people using taxi services mainly belong to the middle walk of life. If the service becomes more expensive, we will lose the majority of the clients”, said one of the drives.

LIVES OF JOURNALSITS ARE ENDANGERED

Journalists in Europe have to work under fear for their lives and physical safety, the PACE stated in the Resolution 1535 (2007) on “Threats to the lives and freedom of expression of journalists”. In 2006 and January 2007 there have been many cases of attacks on journalists.

CASES BROUGHT AGAINST NINE COMMUNITY HEADS

In the court of the first instance of Shirak region nine cases have been brought against the heads of the communities of Azatan, Shirak, Lusaghbyur, Amasia, Voghji, Ardenis, Mets Sepasar, Poqr Sepasar, and Horom. The NGOs which turned to the court yesterday demand to provide the legislative ground of the freedom of information.

Under the January 8 decision of the Commission For Regulating Public Services (CRPS) the telephones of all the providers transferring more than 400 millisecond voice via the Internet were to be disconnected on January 25.

NOTARY KILLED BY MENTAL PATIENT

The person who killed Vanadzor public notary Sonya Veranyan is mentally ill. Prosecutor of the region of Lori Albert Ghazaryan informed Arthur Sakunts, the head of the Helsinki Citizens Association Vanadzor office about it. Nevertheless, Sona Truzyan, the press speaker of the RA Public Prosecutor’s Office, has no such information.

Thousands of people went to the streets today to pay tribute to the memory of Hrant Dink, Turkish-Armenian writer killed on January 19 in Turkey. People walked from Shahoumyan square towards Tsitsernakaberd, with Dink's photo and posters in their hands. The mourning march was mostly silent. Nevertheless, several posters said, «Recognition of the Armenian Genocide is the only way of Turkey into the EU».

PUBLIC NOTARY OF VANADZOR KILLED

At about 11:00 a.m. today Public Notary of Vanadzor Sonya Veranyan was shot dead in her office. Our colleagues in Vanadzor TV Company «Lori» informed that the police have arrested the criminal with the weapon in his hands.

THERE WON’T BE LESSONS IN 155 SCHOOLS FOR ANOTHER WEEK

Under the order of the Ministry of Science and Education (MSE), the winter holidays of secondary schools ended on January 22, but many schools in Yerevan are still on holiday. The press secretary of MSE reports that the municipality has decided that the lessons will be postponed in certain schools till January 31 because of certain issues connected with heating.
